Biodigital Conference with Alberto T. Estévez

In the twenties and thirties of the 20th century, when some architects were disposed systematically to configure modern world, they did it stimulated for a cultural pressure, for a correct adaptation to new times, and fighting for minimum conditions of human existence. On the other hand, today the urgency is bigger. It is about the entire planetary subsistence. The question is not any more a simple caprice, neither an intellectual necessity, neither sensibility for losing less favoured people. Now, the necessity is global, without reservations of classes, races or religions. The whole planet is in front of danger of no-sustainability for all mankind.

By chance, now in this crucial moment, are offered new techniques of an enormous potential: biological techniques and digital techniques. And even fusion of both, in something that can be named biodigital architecture. One that has incorporated the advantages proportioned by the understanding of genetics in both ways, the biological and the digital way, that permit to face with hope some continuity also worthy, but this time a dignity for all The Earth. Then, as the ones that made efforts to break with the ancient classical tradition to found the new modern tradition, we are in front of the challenge of creating the future tradition of biodigital and genetics. For this is necessary that people work on three key elements: researchteaching and profession. This is exactly what we have been doing in Barcelona from 2000, with the Genetic Architecture Research Group and Ph.D. Programme, with the Biodigital Architecture Master’s Degree and with the Genetic Architectures Office. There we learn & teach, we make research and we design: Knowing that there are sufficient differential parameters to predict a complete age’s change. Today, after the first decade of our new Century, it is time to explain, to check, to discuss, fascinations, inspirations, experiences, that the graduates of these Research Group, Master’s Degree and Architecture Office have done in the developing of this biodigital architecture and genetics, up to now.

Foros ESARQ: Stephen Bates (Sergison Bates architects)

Sergison Bates

Since the establishing of the practice in 1996, Sergison Bates architects have earned a reputation as one of the UK’s leading architectural practices, having successfully engaged with all dimensions of architectural and urban design rather than focusing on narrow specialisms. They are currently involved in a wide range of projects at different scales, ranging from urban planning and regeneration to public buildings and housing in the UK and mainland Europe.

Recent projects include a Centre for the Applied Arts in Ruthin, Wales and an urban housing development in Finsbury Park, London, both of which received RIBA awards in 2009; a public library in Blankenberge, Belgium; a care home in Huise-Zingem, Belgium; the London Sustainable Industries Park in Dagenham; a welcome centre and office building in Shanghai for the Novartis Institute for BioMedical Research; a rural housing project in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal and an apartment building and crèche in Geneva, Switzerland. The practice has well established links with associated project support offices in different countries, which provide an understanding of local cultural and legal issues and facilitate communication with clients and the supervision of work on site.

The work of the practice has been extensively published and exhibited and many of their buildings have won awards. The practice has also won international recognition for ‘innovative developments in architecture’ (Erich Schelling Medal for Architecture) and architectural excellence (Heinrich Tessenow Gold Medal for Architecture) and some of their projects were exhibited in the British Pavilion at the 2008 Architecture Biennale in Venice.

All projects are informed by a sensitive approach to place, the experiential potential of materials and construction and a concern for the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability. The practice is committed to a research-based approach, which is supported by the partners’ academic work and their participation in international architectural competitions and juries, and aspires to create an architecture that is contemporary and rooted in its context, at all scales.

Sergison Bates are an international practice in outlook and staff composition, and have numerous collaborative projects with international project partners. In September 2010 a second office was established in central Zurich in response to the growing international commissions received by the practice. The founders, Jonathan Sergison and Stephen Bates and partner Mark Tuff are closely involved in strategic design decisions on all projects and committed to cultivating a strong working relationship with clients and stakeholders in the development of all projects.

Demà dimarts 26 d’abril, a les 19h, a la seu del COAC de Barcelona (Pl. Nova), conferència de Kersten Geers & David Van Severen dintre del cicle Foros ESARQ 2011.

While every attempt of making architecture seems to drift off in rhetorics of programmatic organization and ironic provocation, form and space as such have become a rare good. In our projects we try to counter this by making direct and precise spatial proposals, formal compositions without rhetoric. This literal architecture aims for a phenomenological experience, perhaps despite of its program.

Office Kersten Geers David Van Severen was founded in 2002 by David Van Severen and Kersten Geers.

David Van Severen (Ghent, 1978) graduated in Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Ghent, Belgium and at the Esquela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura in Madrid, Spain. Since 1995 he designed and made several objects, installations and furniture. Until 2004 he worked for Stéphane Beel Architects in Ghent, Xaveer De Geyter Architects in Brussels and for Atelier Maarten Van Severen. He has been a teacher and guest critic at the Academy of Amsterdam, the TU Delft, The Academy of Arnhem, and the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, and he’s currently teaching at the University of Ghent.

Kersten Geers (Ghent, 1975) graduated in Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Ghent, Belgium and at the Esquela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura in Madrid, Spain. He was a project leader for Maxwan Architects and Urbanists in Rotterdam and for Neutelings Riedijk Architects in Rotterdam.(2001-2005).
