Today we present the three electives (free-choice units) that the ESARQ is currently running.
SCENOGRAPHY AND CITIES: METROPOLIS
Start date: 22nd January 2014
Duration: 10 weeks
Credits: 3.0 ECTS
Professors: Alfons Puigarnau – Consuela Dobrescu – Ignacio Infiesta – Antonio Lopez
Course Overview: This course examines the urban age now that most of the world population now lives in cities. The Greek notion of ‘metropolis’ and the (post)modern city have interestingly many characteristics in common such as structures and practices, as well as strategies and tactics, of communication within and across socially organised space.
We use the work of Eugène Ionesco Rhinoceros (1959) as a valid theoretical tool to analyse the following urban strategies: exclusion, totalitarism, mass culture, amongst others and identify how they materialise in physical places in the city of Barcelona, whilst dramatising them with metropolitan intentions as descripted in the Georg Simmel’s essay of 1903 The Metropolis and Mental Life.

The course is divided into two key parts. First, the theoretical analysis of Ionesco’s literary texts in searching postmodern aesthetic categories like ‘Absurdism’, ‘Irrationality’, ‘Contradiction’ or ‘Anonymity’; secondly, through a series of assignments students will exercise a new approach to visualising Barcelona city sites from point of a view rooted on intensity, emotion and action. You will gain access to some useful critical intellectual tools that will enable you to comprehend the (post)modern urban life, and as citizens, as well as architecture students, you develop an informed understanding of social contexts of your urban living.

URBAN REPRESENTATION
Duration: 10 weeks
Credits: 3.0 ECTS
Professor: Manel Arenas – Guillem Garabi
Using canvasses and hand-drawing tools as a medium of representation, the course will integrate the traditionally two- dimensional tools of drawing, mapping, and painting as manipulation methods within the more artistic expression of the physicality of some of the most famous buildings in Barcelona. Students will be introduced to advanced drawing techniques and will refine their hand-drawing, painting and representation expertise.
